Porcelain veneers
Veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front of your teeth. They can change color, close small gaps and even out chipped or oddly shaped teeth.
What veneers can fix
- chipped or worn edges
- small gaps between teeth
- teeth that are pointed or unusually shaped
- discoloration that whitening cannot lift
The process
- Planning. We talk about what you want to change, take x-rays and review your health history. Dr. Ed will tell you plainly if whitening, bonding or braces would serve you better.
- Preparation. Your teeth are numbed and a thin layer of enamel, about the thickness of the veneer, is removed. Impressions go to a dental laboratory, which makes and shades the veneers.
- Bonding. We check the fit and color with you, then bond each veneer permanently.
Living with veneers
Brush and floss normally and keep up regular cleanings. Porcelain resists staining better than natural enamel, but it can chip. Let us know if you grind your teeth at night; a night guard protects your investment.
Questions people ask us
How long do veneers last?
Usually 10 to 15 years. Avoid chewing ice, pens or fingernails, and wear a night guard if you grind.
Is the process reversible?
No. A thin layer of enamel is removed so the veneer sits flush, which is why we plan carefully and make sure veneers are the right choice first.
Can veneers fix crooked teeth?
Mildly crooked teeth, sometimes. For larger problems, braces followed by whitening or veneers usually gives a better and longer-lasting result.
