When decay or a chip damages a tooth, we repair it with composite resin matched to your tooth color. It bonds to the tooth and is placed in one visit.
How a composite filling works
Composite resin is a tooth-colored material that bonds directly to the tooth. Because it sticks to the tooth rather than being wedged in, less healthy tooth needs to be removed than with an old metal filling.
The visit
Dr. Ed numbs the area, removes the decay, and prepares the tooth to bond. The resin goes in in thin layers, each one hardened with a curing light, and is then shaped and polished so it feels right when you bite. You can eat normally once the numbness wears off.
Catching cavities early
Small cavities are quick and inexpensive to fix. Large ones can need a crown or a root canal. That is the main reason we suggest regular checkups and bitewing x-rays: they find decay between the teeth while it is still small.
Questions people ask us
Can you replace my old silver fillings?
Often, yes. If an old filling is cracked, leaking or decayed underneath, replacing it with composite makes sense. If it is sound, Dr. Ed will tell you there is no need to rush.
How long does a filling take?
Most are done in one visit of under an hour, depending on the size and number of fillings.
Will my tooth be sensitive afterward?
Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is normal. If it lasts longer or you feel pain when biting, call us so we can check the bite.
