Dental crowns
A crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged tooth and restores its shape and strength. Ours are porcelain, shaded to match your other teeth.
When a crown makes sense
A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth. Dr. Ed may recommend one to:
- protect a tooth that is cracked or weakened
- restore a tooth that has broken
- support a tooth with a very large filling
- protect a tooth after a root canal
- cover a tooth that is badly discolored or misshapen
- cap a dental implant
If a filling or a smaller repair will do the job, he will tell you that instead. A crown removes some healthy tooth structure, so it should earn its place.
What the visits are like
First visit. The tooth is numbed, shaped to make room for the crown, and an impression is taken. You leave with a temporary crown that protects the tooth while a dental lab makes the permanent one.
Second visit. The temporary comes off, and the new crown is checked for fit, bite and color. When you are both happy with it, it is cemented in place.
Looking after a crown
Brush and floss around it as you would any tooth. The crown itself cannot decay, but the edge where it meets the tooth can, so regular cleanings matter. If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard protects both the crown and your other teeth.
Questions people ask us
How long does a crown last?
With good home care and regular checkups, many crowns last 10 to 15 years or longer. Grinding and chewing ice shorten that.
How many visits does a crown take?
Usually two. At the first we prepare the tooth, take an impression and fit a temporary crown. At the second we fit and cement the permanent one.
Will my crown look different from my other teeth?
It should not. We choose the shade with you in natural light, and you see the crown in place before it is cemented.
