Dental bridges
A bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth. A replacement tooth is joined to crowns on the teeth either side, and the whole piece is cemented in place.
Why replace a missing tooth
A gap is more than a cosmetic issue. Over time, the teeth next to it can tip into the space and the tooth above or below can drift, which changes your bite and makes cleaning harder. Replacing the tooth keeps things where they belong.
Who is a good fit
A bridge works well when the teeth on either side of the gap are healthy enough to hold crowns and your gums are free of active disease. If those teeth are already crowned or heavily filled, a bridge can be an especially good choice, since they would benefit from crowns anyway.
How a bridge is made
- Check-up. Dr. Ed looks at your gums and the teeth beside the gap, usually with x-rays.
- Preparation. The two supporting teeth are numbed and shaped for crowns, and an impression is taken. You leave with a temporary bridge.
- Fitting. The finished bridge is checked for fit, bite and color, then cemented.
Expect some sensitivity for a few weeks. Stick to softer food at first, and cut larger bites into smaller pieces while you get used to it.

How long does a bridge last?
Often 5 to 15 years, and longer with careful cleaning under the replacement tooth and regular checkups.
Is a bridge or an implant better?
It depends on your mouth. A bridge needs crowns on the neighboring teeth; an implant does not touch them but needs enough bone. Dr. Ed explains both, with the fee for each, before you choose.
How do I clean under a bridge?
With a floss threader or a small interdental brush. Your hygienist will show you how at your next cleaning.
