Dental implants
An implant replaces a missing tooth from the root up. A small titanium post in the jaw holds a crown that looks, feels and works like a natural tooth, without touching the teeth beside it.

The process
- Planning. An exam and x-rays, and sometimes a 3D scan, to check the bone and plan the position. If there is not enough bone, a bone graft may come first.
- Placing the post. A small titanium post is placed in the jaw under local anesthetic.
- Healing. Over the following months the bone grows around the post and locks it in place.
- The crown. A connector goes on the post, and a custom crown is attached on top.
Recovery
Some swelling and soreness are normal for a few days. Ice and pain relievers as directed help. Stick to soft food and small bites at first, then return to your normal diet over the next couple of weeks. Keep the area very clean, and come in for your checkups.

Questions people ask us
Am I a candidate for an implant?
Most healthy adults with enough jawbone are. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and past radiation to the jaw can affect healing, so we talk about your health history first.
How long does the whole process take?
Usually several months from start to finish, because the post needs time to bond with the bone before the crown goes on.
How long do implants last?
With good home care and regular checkups, implants often last 20 years or more. The crown on top may need replacing sooner.
