Professional whitening lightens teeth by several shades. Choose an in-office session of about an hour, or custom trays made for you to use at home.
Two ways to whiten
In the office. A whitening gel is applied and activated while you relax in the chair. The visit takes about an hour, and you leave with a noticeably lighter smile. We use the Zoom whitening system.
At home. We take impressions and make whitening trays that fit your teeth exactly. You wear them with the gel we provide, and most people see results within one to two weeks. Keep the trays; a short touch-up every so often keeps your teeth bright.
Why not a store kit?
Over-the-counter kits use one-size trays that let gel leak onto your gums, and some products are harsh on enamel. With professional whitening we check your teeth first, fit the trays to you, and adjust the plan if you get sensitive.
What whitening cannot do
Whitening works on stains from food, drink, smoking and age. Deep gray or brown stains from certain antibiotics or from too much fluoride as a child often do not respond. If that is your situation, Dr. Ed will tell you before you spend money on whitening, and talk through veneers or bonding instead.
Questions people ask us
Is professional whitening safe for my enamel?
Yes, when it is supervised. We check for cavities and gum problems first, and the gels we use are made to limit sensitivity.
How long do the results last?
Years, with good home care. Coffee, tea and red wine will slowly re-stain teeth, and a few nights with your custom trays brings the color back.
Will whitening change my crowns or fillings?
No. Crowns, veneers and fillings keep their color, so we plan any new ones after you have whitened.
