Palatal expansion
If a child's upper jaw is too narrow, a custom expander can widen it gradually while the bones are still growing. It is simple for kids to live with and often shortens later braces.
Why widen the upper jaw
A narrow upper jaw can leave too little room for adult teeth, which then come in crowded or crooked. It can also cause a crossbite, where the upper back teeth sit inside the lower ones. Widening the jaw while a child is growing can make room naturally and reduce the work braces need to do later.
How an expander works
The expander is made to fit the roof of your child’s mouth. In the middle is a small screw. Turning it with a little key, as often as Dr. Ed instructs, widens the appliance slightly and gently guides the two halves of the upper jaw apart. Some expanders are fixed to the back teeth; others are removable, like a retainer.
The steps
- Records. An impression or scan of the mouth, and x-rays if needed, to choose the right expander.
- Fitting. We fit the expander and show you and your child how to turn it.
- Expansion. Short, regular turns at home, with check-ins at the office.
- Holding. Once the width is right, the expander stays in for a while so the new bone can settle.
Daily life
Brush carefully around the appliance, and rinse with mouthwash to reach what the brush misses. Avoid sticky and very hard foods like toffee, caramel and nuts, and cut crunchy fruit and vegetables into small pieces.
Questions people ask us
What age is best for an expander?
Before the bones of the upper jaw fuse, which happens in the teen years. Earlier treatment is usually easier. Dr. Ed will tell you if and when your child would benefit.
Does an expander hurt?
Children feel some pressure after the screw is turned, which fades quickly. Anything beyond mild discomfort is worth a call to us.
How long is it worn?
Usually a few months, depending on how much widening is needed. It often stays in a little longer to let the new width settle.
